Matt Hall Training Day Las Vegas Red Bull Air Race

Matt Hall – Training Practice Day – Las Vegas Master Class Training Session – Red Bull Air Race

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (USA) – Austria’s Hannes Arch dominated training at the Red Bull Air Race on Friday under brilliant blue skies and hot desert temperatures by posting the fastest times in both sessions of the world’s fastest motor sport series and sending a clear message to his two rivals for the 2014 world championship — Britain’s Paul Bonhomme and Nigel Lamb — that he has put his recent run of problems behind him going into Sunday’s crucial race.

Arch, who squandered a 13-point mid-season lead with two dreadful results in the last two races, beat Britain’s Nigel Lamb into second place in the morning session with the fastest time of the day – 49.751 seconds. And then in the warmer afternoon session, which made the track slower, Arch left championship leader Paul Bonhomme of Britain behind him in second place with a time of 50.224. With temperatures rising to 32 degrees, Germany’s Matthias Dolderer was third in the morning session while Martin Sonka of the Czech Republic was third in the afternoon session.

Bonhomme holds a slim one-point lead in the championship over Arch and Bonhomme with 12 points up for grabs for the winner of Sunday’s race, the seventh in the eight-race Red Bull Air Race World Championship. While some pilots use training to experiment with their race lines, their timings ahead of Saturday’s Qualifying are nevertheless often a pretty good indicator of their relative strength.

“It feels good,” said Arch. “It’s a great feeling even though it’s only training. It’s good for the confidence and that’s what I need. Sometimes I think pilots think a bit too much and try to dissect everything too much. Sometimes it seems you can fly faster if you don’t think too much about everything else. I’m having a lot of fun flying here and it’s showing in the times.”
