Official Simple Little Life video of basic knife making tools – part 1 of 3.
This video is part 1 of a 3 part series that I’ve started on making a knife by hand from scratch. If you have always wanted to make a knife, but haven’t really known where to start, or thought that it might be something complicated and difficult; these videos are for you.
I will take you through the process that I went through to make my first knife, and I think you’d be surprised at how easy it is.
In this video I’m outlining the basic hand tools that we are going to use. In the second video I will show you a basic knife-making jig to make, and in the 3rd video I will take you through the actual process of making a knife.
The idea behind these knives being uploaded (roughly) a week apart is to allow you, the viewer, enough time to gather the tools, build the jig, and be ready for the video where we actually make the knife. Without being a live video, I want to make this as interactive and as close to live as I can.
So, have a watch of this first video, check out the basic tool list below; gather those tools, and then we will get ready to make a knife. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. I will do my best to answer them and work with you to make sure you’re ready for the next video in the series when it comes out. Cheers!
1 – A design. Make your own, loosely copy another, just make sure you have something that you can use to base your knife off of.
2 – Combination square
3 – Hack Saw – To cut the steel black out.
4 – Jig saw – to make finer cuts in whatever material you are going to use for the scales (handles) of your knife.
5 – A file – a basic hand file will be a tool of huge value to you. Ultimately an assortment of various files will be very useful to you. Round files for different features of your blade, and even jewellers files for adding fine detail to your blades. A flat file will be the minimum requirement for making a knife (can you can make a great knife with just this file) but make sure to get a file card as well (see video for explanation of file card)
5 – Hammer
6 – Center punch
7 – Drill bits – get good quality ones.
8 – Sand Paper – 220, 400 and 800 grit are great options to have available.
9 – A bench vise. By far one of the most important tools when making a knife.

About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we’re looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the “American dream” working for some big company and making someone else rich. It’s not about the money, it’s about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.
