History & Significance

What is “Rally Day”?

In the early to mid-20th century, Protestant Sunday Schools across North America established “Rally Day” as an annual autumn kickoff celebration. It marked the return of children to regular church services and classes after the summer break. Small, vibrant celluloid pinback buttons were produced as badges of attendance or rewards for students.

Symbolism & Imagery

This button highlights dual flag iconography: the 48-star American Flag crossed alongside the Christian Flag. The Christian Flag bears the red Latin cross and the phrase “By This Sign Conquer”—a famous translation of the Latin In Hoc Signo Vinces, famously associated with the Emperor Constantine and widely adopted by early Christian youth movements in the United States.

Who Collects These Pins?

Celluloid pinback buttons from the late Victorian through the pre-WWII eras have a passionate collector base spanning several niche categories:

  • Americana & Social History Collectors: Enthusiasts interested in everyday American life, religious traditions, and community organizations of the early 1900s.
  • Religious & Sunday School Memorabilia Buffs: Collectors specializing in church badges, attendance pins, and Christian organization items like the Christian Endeavor or YMCA/YWCA.
  • Patriotic & Flag Collectors: Collectors drawn to crossed-flag designs, historical star patterns, and national symbol crossovers.
  • Celluloid Pinback Specialists: Collectors who focus specifically on early lithographed celluloid buttons produced by historic makers like Whitehead & Hoag, Bastian Bros., or Torsch & Franz.

Similar Rare & Valuable Pins

Early celluloid pins range widely in rarity. Here are a few notable examples of similar collectible buttons from the same era:

WWI / WWII Patriotic Flag Pins

Pins featuring crossed Allied flags (e.g., US and UK/France) or wartime slogans like “Long May It Wave” often command $35–$75+ depending on condition and historical context.

Early Suffrage & Social Cause Pins

From the same celluloid production era, buttons championing Women’s Suffrage, Temperance (WCTU), or early labor union causes are highly sought after, frequently selling for hundreds of dollars.

Liberty Bell Rally Day Buttons

Rare variations of Sunday School Rally Day pins featuring local city hallmarks or historic symbols like the Liberty Bell carry strong regional collector value.
